Sometimes not having enough food is the result of short-term circumstances (being laid off, seasonal employment) while other times it is a long-term problem (chronic poverty, disability, homelessness). The number of people who are food-insecure has doubled since 2000. Almost half the people who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance – formerly known as food stamps – are children.
