James 1:2-3 says, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.” The Apostle James’ asserts that trials are inevitable, and yet he maintains that we are supposed to consider such times as “pure joy.” How, asks Rutherford, is this possible?
