Map: Sacred Sites of Iraq

Modern-day Iraq was home to holy men revered by people of many faiths--and may even be where the Garden of Eden bloomed.

Tradition holds that Adam, Noah, and Abraham all lived in the land that is now Iraq. The prophets Jonah and Daniel preached here, and some of the Bible's most memorable scenes took place against the backdrop of the Babylonian Empire.

Muslims honor many of these biblical heroes as Islamic prophets. Shrines to Shi'ia martyrs and saints also draw millions of pilgrims to Iraq each year.
