"I Will Survive" was originally released in 1979 as the B-side to Gloria Gaynor’s disco version of the old Righteous Brothers’ "Substitute," but became a worldwide hit when radio disc jockeys played it instead. The song's lyrics describe her discovery of personal strength following an initially devastating breakup and is delivered with increasing confidence and backed by a stirring instrumental accompaniment – but no backup singers, unique during that period. One of the most famous disco songs of all time, it remains Gaynor's biggest hit – and an anthem for those determined not to be defeated by lost love.
