Speaking of controversial songs, Joan Osborne’s version of this song by oddly named group The Hooters is one of the more interesting lyrical songs from the ‘90s. Joan often sang the lyrics “What if God was one of us?/Just a slob like one of us?” with a slight air of contempt, but they still hold a layer of depth that is missing from most of the songs on this list.
