Bella celebrates her birthday with the Cullens. As Bella opens up an envelope from Carlisle and Esme, Bella gets a paper cut and the blood triggers Jasper to lunge and attack Bella. The other Cullens calm Jasper down but in the midst of the scuffle, Bella cuts her arm on the broken glass. Carlisle stiches Bella up. Bella is not upset with Jasper and understands that he hasn't been a "vegetarian" as long as the other Cullens; therefore it's harder for him to resist the urge of human blood.
