Unlike some serious health conditions, obesity can be reversed, say authors John Hoffman, Judith Salerno, and Alexandra Moss in The Weight of the Nation. Conquer it and you vastly improve your odds of a longer, healthier, happier life. But you don’t have to get back to what you weighed in high school. Losing as little as 5 to 7 percent of your total weight – seven to fourteen pounds in the above examples – lowers blood pressure, improves blood sugar levels, and reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes by 60 percent.
