Actor, director, investor, philanthropist - Mel Gibson has worn a great deal of hats and has succeeded in each one. He has starred in movies like Braveheart, the infamous Lethal Weapon series and has directed and co-wrote The Passion of the Christ. However, despite his best efforts Gibson has managed to cause quite a bit of controversy which forced many onlookers to question his sanity and sincerity.
Throughout his career Gibson has been linked to racism, accusations of homophobia and alleged anti-semitism due to his inappropriate comments in interviews and in various public appearances. In 2006, Gibson was arrested for a DUI and later entered a recovery program to battle his alcoholism. After a 2009 divorce from his wife of 26 years, Gibson was highlighted in the media limelight in 2010 due to domestic violence charges from his then girlfriend. A restraining order was issued, keeping Gibson away from his ex-girlfriend and their child. Several phone messages were leaked on the internet and were played over radio and news programs, that highlighted Gibson's threats and abusive language against his ex-girlfriend. Despite the constant controversy, Gibson has continued to act and direct films.
