Back in 1923, Rin Tin Tin became known as “the dog who saved Hollywood” after his film “Where The North Begins” was a huge success. It was followed by 22 more Rin Tin Tin films that were actually credited with saving Warner Bros. from bankruptcy.
“Lassie” was the star of seven MGM films beginning with “Lassie Come Home” in 1943, then a top-rated TV show that ran for 19 years. “Benji,” a mixed-breed mutt rescued from an animal shelter, was the star of eight films.
