“Right after I was married,” she says, “I had just turned 22 I said, ‘I must learn how to be a professional writer.’ So, I went to a nearby college and the professor assigned us a short story. He said, “Write about what you know, whether it's a family secret or a friend's story that is interesting, or something you read in the newspaper.”
