Can it work? In 1884, the American Committee for the Statue of Liberty ran out of funds for the Lady Liberty’s pedestal. Newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer urged the American public to donate money through appeals in his newspaper, the New York World. Pulitzer raised over $100,000 in six months. More than 125,000 people contributed with most donations being $1 or less.
