Alice Walker shares the difficult lives of Celie, Nettie, Sophia, and Shug Avery, and we see the importance of a strong spirit and the power of perception to change one’s circumstances. The story became a celebrated movie and stage play. The book has inspired many including Oprah, who on numerous occasions sited The Color Purple as being very influential.
