This Pulitzer Prize-winning novel is set in the rural south in a time period when black women were at the bottom of the class system. Alice Walker shares the difficult lives of Celie, Nettie, Sophia, and Shug Avery, and we see the importance of a strong spirit and the power of perception to change one’s circumstances. The story became a celebrated movie and stage play. The book has inspired many including Oprah, who on numerous occasions sited The Color Purple as being very influential.
