Dr. Seuss tackles environmental issues and the dangers of industrialization in this book, but not in a way that is preachy, false, or forced. With whimsical characters like Bar-ba-Loots, Swomee Swans, and the Once-ler, all wrapped up in Seuss’ beautiful rhymes, you don’t know you’re actually reading a parable about corporate greed until you’ve reached the end.

Seuss paints a scary world, but also a hopeful one. As the Once-ler says to the little boy at the end of the book, “Unless someone like you...cares a whole awful lot...nothing is going to get better...It's not.”
