Precocious, headstrong girls found a kindred spirit in Anne Shirley, the heroine of Anne of Green Gables. The red-headed orphan was spunky and bright and won over everyone she encountered, especially her adoptive parents Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert who originally wanted a boy. From Anne of Green Gables, we were taught about the importance of “bosom” friendship and keeping a courageous spirit.
