The God Box
by Mary Lou Quinlan
It’s not just a box. They’re not just words on paper. It's faith, love and hope. It’s a message that will last longer than life. They’re words that will continue to teach, love and nurture.
Mary Lou Quinlan’s mother, Mary Finlayson, passed away several years ago. Quinlan, her father and brother were devastated because they not only lost a loved one but they felt like a piece of themselves was cut away. On the eve of Mary’s funeral, the family found 10 boxes that belonged to Mary. Inside each box contained several tiny notes that ranged from asking for the right flooring for her daughter’s home or a cure for own blood cancer. Mary referred to these boxes as her God boxes.
The notes were prayers that Mary wrote to God, asking him to help her family and others around her. They were a way for her to communicate with God and maintain faith.
Quinlan decided that her mother’s faith needed an outlet and she wanted to inspire others who had lost a loved one; she wanted to help them through the trials and tribulations of their own life and bring them hope. So she wrote the book The God Box and forever memorialized her mother’s hopes and prayers. While Quinlan read the notes and compiled pieces for her book, her mother was able to continue to teach her life lessons through her prayers.
In The God Box, Quinlan shares her mother’s hopes, dreams and inspirations with the world. Quinlan, through her mother’s words, is able to show others that hope can live on and no matter what the circumstances are - we can learn from each other.
“The more I reread what she had written, the more I realized that these notes filled with loving words were more than mementos. Fingering each slip of paper, I could reclaim her sparkle and common sense, her humor and optimism, and –about all- her enduring spirit,” Quinlan said. It’s amazing how a woman’s prayers could continue to influence her family and others who read them.
The God Box allows Quinlan to share her mother’s faith, love and hope. The notes helped Quinlan let go and hold on at the same time. Readers will feel their heart strings pulled, as they read about a mother’s love that is able to touch the lives of others who need comfort and hope. The God Box is more than a book, it’s the hope, love and faith that we all need in our lives.
