Olympic Athletes Take Their Faith to the Games
17,000 athletes and officials
Olympic officials try to accommodate athletes’ specific religious needs, knowing a generic clergyman won't do most of the time. For example, only an ordained priest can hear Catholic confessions – no imam or rabbi will do. With many faiths in mind, organizers have recruited 193 chaplains representing nine faiths to serve the 17,000 athletes and officials expected to participate in 2012's London Olympics.
