While the American men stumbled in singles tennis action at the iconic Wimbledon venue in London, Serena Williams carried the banner valiantly with gold medals in both singles and women’s doubles (along with sister Venus). Williams completed what is commonly known as the “Golden Slam” in which a tennis player wins all four major events (Wimbledon, the U.S. Open, the French Open and the Australian Open) or the “Grand Slam,” along with an Olympic gold medal.

Twin brothers Bob and Mike Bryan claimed gold in the men’s doubles event and also completed the “Golden Slam.” Mike Bryan added a bronze medal to his collection in the mixed doubles tournament with Lisa Raymond.

Overall, Team USA’s four medals were the most of the 2012 Olympics ahead of Great Britain, Belarus, France and Russia who each tallied two medals apiece.
